The real problem is often not the woman . . . it's the suit.

Because fashion must change every year in order to keep selling new clothes, the ones you see in magazines are often not the best choice for you or anyone's body type. The fashion advice contained in the magazines is there primarily to sell product for their advertisers.

My first advice: ignore the fashion magazines.

Below you'll find ten tips that will guide you to the swimsuit that looks perfect on you. Seek out that perfect suit – buy it and wear it year after year, as long as it looks good on you. A suit that looks fantastic will stay in style for years to come.

1. Wear Solid Colors Instead of Prints
Prints are much more likely to make you look larger than you are, and the bolder the print the bigger you'll look. Dark colors are better on light-skinned women. Dark-skinned women can often get away with brighter jewel tones, as long as the color is dark and bold. Shop with a friend, and look for the perfect color for you!

2. Wear V-Shaped Stripes or Horizontal Stripes
Stripes create an optical illusion and draw the eye inward, making the most of your shape. Even if you don't like stripes, you can seek out v-patterns in solid colors in both cut and contrasting fabrics, and you'll get a similar effect if this is what you're after. This is often a better choice for dark-skinned women because it gives you other option to make the most of your shape besides black.

3. Go for Large Flower Prints, Not Tiny Patterns
If you like the look of florals, by wearing large prints it will draw the eye to the pattern instead of the shape flaws, distracting viewers from your tummy bulge you may want to cover. Tiny patterns make almost anything look larger.

4. Spandex – Much More Expensive, But Worth It!

6. Look at Different Leg Shapes
High-rising legs makes you look taller. Short skirts can hide parts of your thighs. You'll have to try on different styles to find the perfect shape for you, but when you do find it, stick with it.

7. Two-Piece Suits Flatter You
Two piece suits can be surprisingly flattering. So try the tankinis and other similar styles. An additional benefit – you can mix and match the tops and bottoms in different flattering colors, too.

8. Good Built in Bra Support
If your breasts sag into your belly, you get a very round outline; well-supported breasts, especially when large, can give you that hourglass figure you may desire.

9. Pay Close Attention to What's Going on Behind You
Many women forget to check how things look in back. There are few things less attractive than a bottom that slides into your, um, crack. Look at the top, too, for what a friend of mine used to call "back boobies." If you have a problem there, a high-backed suit or no-backed suit can help conceal it.

10. Buy Black or Dark-Colored Sarong Wrap
Take sarongs off when you're in the water, put them back on when you're out, and you have an elegant and timeless look. Follow the same guidelines for sarong cloth patterns that you follow with your swimsuit. For a funkier look, get a hip scarf, like one you'd tie over jeans, and use that instead, tied low with the knot just below the bottom of your swimsuit.
