Talking Plus-Size Fashion with Blogger Emmi Rantakallio
Posted by IGIGI on May 1, 2014
Emmi Rantakallio, 22 is a plus size fashion blogger based in Stockholm Sweden. She’s working towards becoming a makeup artist and her passion for styling and creating looks definitely shows when it comes to her personal style! Emmi has a chic, minimalistic style that mixes modern tailored pieces with luxe vintage finds.
Emmi thinks that self-confidence and body positivity are crucial when it comes to fashion and creating your own style and we couldn’t agree more. We got a chance to chat with her more about this as well as how she’s cultivated her personal style.
IGIGI – How did you first become interested in fashion?
Emmi – Since I was little I have always been fascinated by color and shape. I liked to draw a lot, “dress up” and hang out at my mother’s hair salon. The interest developed to liking art, historical clothing, fashion and beauty.
IG – How would you describe your personal style?
Emmi – My personal style is typical scandinavian I think -simple cuts, darker colors and well-made clothes. Maybe elegant with a twist. But I also love colors, prints and experimenting with new garments and styles!
IG – Who are some of your favorite designers of the moment?
Emmi – At the moment I’d say Dolce & Gabbana, Diane von Furstenberg and Tom Ford. They’ve all made interesting spring collections!
IG – What are 3 trends that you’re loving for spring?
Emmi – Definitely mixing prints, metallics and the black and white trend as well.
IG – Whats one item in your closet that you can’t live with out?
Emmi – It has to be a pair of black simple pants or jeans – they go with everything.
IG – Who is one person who’s style you absolutely love?
Emmi – A mix between plus size bloggers Franceta Johnson, Margie Ashcroft and Callie Thorpe.
IG – You wear a lot of great thrifted and second hand pieces, do you have any advice for plus-size women when it comes to vintage clothing shopping?
Emmi – Yes, second hand and vintage has become quite popular in Sweden. My tip is to visit vintage stores for plus sizes, and take your time. Since second hand-stores usually don’t have the same garment in different sizes it takes a bit longer to shop. You can find a lot of fun and different garments though! The boutiques that “hand pick” pieces unfortunately usually have more exclusive pieces in smaller sizes. But on the other hand you can find a lot of nice bags, shoes and accessories in those boutiques!
IG – How important do you think body positivity and confidence are when it comes to Plus-Size fashion?
Emmi – Very, very important! The media and fashion industry should not only feature the stereotypical woman and man; but different body shapes, ethnicities and types of beauty that falls outside the industry standards. It’s far more interesting and reflects the reality of our world better. I think everyone would feel better if we had more images out there like this.
