High School Junior Petitions for the First Plus-Size Disney Princess

So much of size discrimination and bullying is ingrained during childhood. Kids are taught hate at a very early age and that hate usually extends to everyone who is different from what they are taught to consider the norm. One of the easiest ways to combat this bullying, as well as to dispel a lot of body image issues that kids often struggle with, is to show more representations of different body types in media and advertising.

Recently, the Huffington Post reported that a plus-size, high school junior named Jewel Moore from Farmville, Virginia, started a Change.org petition asking Disney to create a plus-size Disney princess. As of Sunday evening, the petition had 9,689 signatures, with only 311 more needed before the petition reached its goal of 10,000 signatures. To sign the petition, click here!

Say It Ain’t So! Spanx May Be Dangerous to Your Health?

Just when we thought the days of dangerous corsets were over, some new research came out recently that shows how our precious Spanx and other shapewear are literally squeezing our organs. Ouch! The Huffington Post interviewed three different doctors: a gastroenterologist, a dermatologist, and a chiropractor, and this is what they found out:

1. Shapewear compresses your stomach, intestine, and colon, which can cause acid reflux, heartburn, and even esophagitis.

2. The pressure on your intestine can cause abdominal discomfort, bloating, and gas (just what everyone loves when you’re in a formal dinner setting).

3. It can even restrict your breath, since it’s pressing on your diaphragm.

It was the wise and beautiful Dolly Parton, aka Truvy Jones, who said in Steel Magnolias that she never left the house without her thighs encased in spandex, and many celebrities have been spotted wearing shapewear in some capacity.

Colorblocking: A Plus-Size Dress Trend for All Seasons

The colorblocking trend is still in full force and I am thrilled about it. Colorblocking is one of those trends that anyone can pull off easily and, if you pick colors that are subtle enough, you can wear colorblocked pieces well past their “prime” trendy season, because they can function as an alternate pattern style. Any trend or pattern that’s strong enough to wear from season to season is one that I can get behind.

Cool, Comfortable, and Confident: Talking Plus-Size Fashion with Jo Tan

Jollin (Jo) Tan, 21, lives in Singapore and is a full-time student at University pursuing a major in Literature. Jo is also a full-time poet, part-time rockstar, potential cat lady, and a burgeoning plus-size fashion blogger.

Jo says that half of her closet has the soft-grunge-y rockstar thing going on, with lots of acid wash skinnies, band tees, and muscle tees with a lot of black. The other half of her closet is full of pastel florals and chiffon. “Really, I’m not even sure what’s going on half the time, but I’m glad it works for me,” says Jo. “I suppose if I had to tie my fashion down, I would describe it as an edgy floral kinda look? Like, you know what floral Dr Martens boots look like? That look. The ones with the black base.”

Jo took the time to talk with IGIGI about her cool, edgy style, how she got into plus-size fashion blogging, and how important it is for her to be comfortable in her wardrobe and her body.

Lingerie Company Aerie Uses ‘Un-Retouched’ Models In New Spring Campaign

Aerie, a lingerie company owned by the same company that owns American Eagle, recently released a new line of adverts for their newest Spring 2014 line featuring models without retouching in an effort to “challenge supermodel standards” for young girls.

Jenny Altman, the style and fit expert of the line, told ABC News that they decided not to use photoshop because it was important to aerie that the line represent reality.

“We left everything. We left beauty marks, we left tattoos, what you see is really what you get with our campaign,” said Altman to ABC News. “It’s a selling point because our customers represent this great demographic and they don’t really get to see what girls their age really look like.”

This is not a thoroughly new concept to present models without airbrushing. As we have mentioned before, Verily Magazine, a body positive female-centric publication, launched with the promise of a total ban on all Photoshop retouching. However, for a company to use totally untouched models in a major ad campaign is a little more unusual.
