Swimsuits For All + Plus Size Models and Plus Size Bloggers Promote Body Positivity

The ladies of SFA’s calendar pose together in a shot inspired by 2014 SI Swimsuit Issue cover.

Recently Plus Size Swimwear retailer Swimsuits For All created a buzz when they released the “Sexy At Every Curve” swimsuit calendar. Inspired by the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition editorials, SFA decided to move forward with this project after it was rumored that a curvy model would, for the first time, brace the cover of the annual issue of this magazine. When the magazine decided to move forward with 3 straight size models on the cover, SFA decided to take action.

SFA’s President Moshe Laniado had this to say about it…

“When the issue came out and that didn’t happen, we were disappointed and decided to do our own calendar shoot around the idea that curvy women — and all women — are sexy in swimwear and sexy to men,”

SFA teamed up with Plus Size Models Robin Lawley, Jada Sezer, Shareefa J and Plus Size Blogger Gabi Gregg to create the 12 month body positive swimwear calendar. The ladies were also sure to add in a shot inspired by the Sports Illustrated 2014 Swimsuit issues’ cover.

One SFA’s main goals in releasing the “Sexy at Every Curve” calendar was to promote body positivity and to showcase images of beautiful women in all sizes in an editorial type of shoot that typically only features straight size models. Gabi Gregg of Gabifresh says…

“I  think it’s sad that the representatives of women in mainstream culture are usually so small. Just because we have such a diversity of sizes in the real world. I obviously think that all women are beautiful in sizes 0, 2, 4, those women are beautiful too but there definitely needs to be more representation of all sizes because what happens, is that I think so many women see those girls and they think they have to look like them or they should look like them. And, so, it leads to low self-esteem, and I know that plus size models and bloggers like myself are really helping change that.”

It’s definitely important to have representation in mainstream media of all different kinds of women – shapes, sizes and ethnic backgrounds. The Swimsuit For All “Sexy At Every Curve” calendar is a great place to start. You can view the full calendar here. We hope this trend continues.
