10 Simple, DIY Plus-size Halloween Costumes

Posted by on October 22, 2013

So you want a cute Halloween costume (duh), but you don’t necessarily want to go-out wearing some variation of lingerie, nor do you want to spend a lot of money on something you’re only going to wear once. Trust me, I know the struggle is real, but look no further, for here is my top 10 list of cute, (mostly) DIY, plus-size Halloween costumes.

1. Sock Hop Sweetie

Is there anything cuter than a poodle skirt? If you want to emulate Sandy in Grease, try picking up a poodle skirt from a vintage or thrift shop. Some of them may be a little on the expensive side, especially if you opt for vintage, but this is a skirt that you could wear outside of Halloween as well. If you don’t want to drop the cash, try buying or making a poodle patch and sewing it onto a black skirt that you already have. Pair it with a white collared shirt, a baby pink cardigan, and a preppy pair of oxfords. (Going as “Bad Sandy” is pretty easy, too, since all it takes is some black jeans, a leather jacket, red lipstick, and some big, blonde, curls.)

2. Frida Kahlo

I’ve been seeing some absolutely amazing Frida Kahlo costumes lately. All it takes is a Mexican-inspired top, a maxi skirt, flower crown, and then draw on that unibrow and you’re good to go.

3. Flo from the Progressive Commercials

I actually made this costume myself one year. Buy a cheap, white apron, iron on the progressive logo, and then make a “Flo” name tag. I recommend copying the cat-eye eyeliner and wearing a blue headband so you can get the full effect.

4. Jackson Pollock

So, I clearly have a soft spot for artists, but this Jackson Pollack one is really easy. Pull out some old overalls or pick some up at the Goodwill, and splatter paint the bejeezus out of them! Get creative with it and then wear a white tee underneath, pull on some boots, and walk around with a paint brush.

If you can’t find overalls, you can use some old jeans, too!

5. Cupcake Cutie

For the cupcake costume, all you really need is a brown skirt and a colored shirt of your choice. The girl pictured above (a friend of mine, actually) chose to wear a pink capelet onto which she sewed little pieces of holographic paper – sprinkles!

6. A Good Egg

This cute DIY top, by Allie Krystal, is technically not a Halloween piece, but it works great for a Halloween costume. If you want to go as your favorite breakfast food, just take a piece of yellow felt and a piece of white felt, cut them into egg shapes ,and sew them onto a t-shirt.

7. Bag of Jelly Beans

This one is easy and cute. Take a clear trash bag, fashion it into a dress (try to mimic Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook) and stuff it full of multicolored balloons. I recommend wearing this outfit with pants of some sort, so you can tuck the bottom of the trash bag in so your balloons stay put.

8. Rosie the Riveter

Don’t we all love a good period costume? For a Rosie the Riveter costume, rock a Canadian tuxedo (denim shirt with jeans), throw your hair up into a knot with a cute red kerchief, add some red lipstick, and show off those guns. It’s for the troops!

9. Flapper

After the success of the new Great Gatsby movie, flappers are roarin’ back into style. For most women, flapper costumes shouldn’t really require too much effort. Aim for a cute LBD (I recommend something with a drop waist for the right 20s feel), add a headband, a long string of pearls and some pin curls for added effect.

p.s. It’s Prohibition so make sure you have your flask handy.

10. Jellyfish

Last but not least, try this awesome jellyfish costume. It works really great as a group costume, but it’s good for individuals too. Just get a clear umbrella, add some streamers and dress in pastels. You’ll be the cutest sea creature around.
