Style 101: The Wrap Dress

Diane Von Furstenberg

In 1974 women’s fashion was changed forever by the introduction of the wrap dress! Diane Von Furstenberg rose to fame by producing her first jersey version of the wrap dress, and since then women everywhere have worn this style as an easy go to for whatever the occasion. Diane’s feminine and bold point of view translated easily to this chic dress and it’s easy to see why this style is one of our favorites here at IGIGI!

Why is the wrap dress so special, and more importantly why does every woman need one in her closet? The combination of creating an asymmetric line on the body allows the eye to be drawn downward, which lengths out any silhouette. Any shape or size can put on a wrap dress and not only feel fantastic, but look fantastic – as it emphasizes the waist and makes you look taller! (we call this fashion magic)

Whats also great about this style is it’s versatility! A great wrap dress can take you easily from a busy day in the office to after work cocktails with the girls! This style has been an IGIGI staple for the past few seasons (Neve Wrap Dress, Margherita Wrap Dress and our Letta Maxi) and this season was no different! For Fall 2014 we re-interpreted the classic wrap dress and payed homage to the classic abstract prints of the 70′s with our Dominique Wrap Dress in Emerald Escape! Blogger Carlisa of Girl On The Go With A Fro creates a chic look above by adding an on-trend chunky black pump and keeping her accessories minimal! We love this look.

Here are some things to keep in mind when purchasing your first wrap dress – proportion and print! If you are petite you want to make sure that the bodice is in proportion to your frame. Same thing goes for prints – if you want something a little more subdued try smaller, graphic prints!
