Double Standards: Instagram Deletes then Reinstates Plus-Size Woman’s Account
Posted by IGIGI on July 22, 2014
From Jezebel we learned of Instagram deleting a plus-size woman’s account because it deemed a photo of her wearing a white bra and polka-dot boy shorts inappropriate. After the photo was tagged, her whole account was rendered inactive.
Nineteen-year-old Ohio college student Samm Newman said that when she was younger, she dealt with bullying over her weight, which led her to resort to self harm. But she found strength in the online body positivity community and began to proudly post pictures of herself.
It was not until she was interviewed by NBC News 4 that Instagram apologized and reinstated her account with the following statement:
“When our team processes reports from other members of the Instagram community, we occasionally make a mistake. In this case, we wrongly removed content and worked to rectify the error as soon as we were notified. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
A quick perusal of Instagram shows many, MANY photos of straight size women wearing fitness clothing, bikinis, and sometimes even less – why is it that the social networking giant would deem a plus-size woman inappropriate? We can all see the double standard here – and it has to stop.
