Whitney Thompson of America’s Next Top Model Shows Off Her Curves In Her New Plus-Size Lingerie Campaign
Posted by Jane Janeczko on October 10, 2013
I’ll admit, it’s been a while since I religiously watched a season of Tyra Banks’s addictive supermodel reality show, America’s Next Top Model. Actually, the tenth cycle, Whitney Thompson’s winning season, might be the last one that I watched in real time, since now I mainly binge-watch rerun seasons on Oxygen. That tenth season was a doozy, though – Whitney Thompson won and broke through the Top Model barrier as the first plus-size model chosen as the winner of the competition. Now, five years later, she has a successful career as a fit model, spokesperson, and jewelry designer.
Thompson, now 26, has done some editorial work, but most of her work is purely commercial, doing shoots with brands like Forever 21, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Torrid, and landing spokesperson jobs like her ambassadorship for the National Eating Disorders Association.
Now Thompson is featured in a new plus-size lingerie campaign for Britain’s Panache Lingerie’s new Sculptresse line. The collection offers sizes ranging from 36-46 with cups from D-J. Thompson’s other business ventures include her dating site for plus-size singles called “The Big and the Beautiful,” and her candle and jewelry company aptly named “Supermodel.”
In an interview with the UK’s Daily Mail, Thompson spoke about her collaboration:
“As a curvy girl, I have always struggled with finding lingerie that offers the support I need, and the style that I want, which is why I’m so thrilled to have found the Sculptresse collection by Panache. Panache have always delivered stylish choices, but you can really tell that they understand the fit. I don’t care how cute a bra is if it doesn’t fit me properly! Each piece in the collection is a comfortable fit with great support, and they’re beautiful. I feel feminine and sexy when I wear the pieces, which is important for me and other curvy women. It’s about time we had a collection like this for the real woman.”
It can really be challenging trying to find cute, well-made bras as a plus-size woman, or as any women with a larger chest. It often seems that if you have a cup size larger than a C-cup, the only bra options left are nude, white, or black. The press images from the Sculptresse line are anything but boring and they really are some cute knickers. Lane Bryant’s Cacique and Hips & Curves also offer some cute alternatives to granny panties and boring bras, while specifically catering to plus-size women.
Part of the unique challenge in being plus-sized is that there is no end to the amount of shapewear that you can find, but when it comes to a cute bra, it’s game over. Personally, I think shapewear can be kind of awesome, especially for special occasion dresses. It comforts me to know that there’s a layer of lycra between my tummy and my formal dress (even ultra-skinny celebs like Katie Holmes and Sandra Bullock wear Spanx), but does that mean I want shapewear to be part of my everyday life? No, thank you. Granted, it could be worse – women could still be strutting around in whalebone corsets and four layers of petticoats, but some women are so dependent on their shapewear that they let their Spanx dictate their fashion choices and that is a problem. Sometimes it’s okay to just let your body breathe.
That’s why some cute new panties and an adorable, supportive bra can be such a positive experience, and such an ego boost. To quote a greeting card I once received, “Sometimes, when my underwear matches my outfit, it makes me feel like I really have my life together.” So treat yourself and buy a cute new bra, because you deserve it.
