Top 10 Biggest Fall Fashion Trends for Plus-size Women

Posted by on September 17, 2013

Hi, my name is Jane and I’m a trend addict. I love trends. I really do. I obsessively check issues of InStyle and Women’s Wear Daily so I can be on the cutting edge and I consistently update my wardrobe in some of the simplest ways I can with a well-placed necklace or a rocking new pair of booties. The classics are wonderful and important, but trends give us something to look forward to.

1. Tartan & Plaid

While I have never been to Scotland, some of the gorgeous tartan skirts out this season are giving me a sense of wanderlust. Mixing a good plaid with a soft sweater is effortless, comfortable and flattering.

2. Leather accent dresses and skirts

There’s something inherently tough about leather. Adding leather accents and details to dresses and skirts keeps a sense of that toughness while making the material utterly  feminine and still edgy.

3. Oxblood

While the name of this deep, rich red color makes me cringe; the shade itself is incredibly luxe and flattering on every skin tone. See some options here, here and here.

4. Booties

As I said in a previous post, when struggling to find good wide-calf boots, booties can be a good compromise. They’re often cheaper than riding boots and they are painfully cute with skirts and dresses as well as jeans.

5. Leather jackets

Is there ever a time when a good leather jacket won’t be on trend or effortlessly chic? Answer: no. However, finding affordable leather jackets is challenging to say the least. Here are some less-expensive faux leather options here, here and here.

6. Printed sheath dresses

It is a struggle to find flattering sheath dresses when you are plus-sized, but I have found that printed sheaths are an excellent compromise since the right pattern can camouflage and flatter any tummy areas that sometimes get emphasized with sheaths. Adding a boxy jacket makes a very fashion-forward silhouette.

7. Peter Pan collars

Peter Pan collars might be legitimately my favorite accent on any top, dress or sweater. They add a delightful charm to any outfit and remind me of my uniform and knee sock days way back (without the horrendous skorts).

A Peter Pan collar can add the right amount of softness to any ensemble.

8. Denim on denim

The good ‘ol Canadian tuxedo is making a comeback in a major way. Personally, I am a huge fan of denim mixing of all kinds and finally there are tons of different denim options on the market. From overalls, to rompers, to denim blazers, to the good standby (and my personal favorite) jean jackets the denim options are exploding all over the market.

9. Pastels

With the return of denim, pastels are also making a big comeback, drawing on some wonderfully nostalgic 90s flair. One of the easiest ways to add a pastel pop to your look is with your manicure. I recommend looking at OPI’s “You’re such a Budapest” from their Euro collection for the perfect lilac shade or their “Gargantuan green grape” shade for a clean mint hue. Adding a matte topcoat is on trend and will make your mani look utterly chic. Another great way to add pastel touches to your wardrobe is through a great handbag, clutch, necklace, sunglasses, or even a lovely, fuzzy sweater, if you’re feeling bold.

10. Midi skirts and dresses

There is a lot of debate in the plus-size fashion community about midi skirts for plus-size women. Some think that they can look frumpy and while it is certainly a risk, a midi skirt with some wedge booties and dark tights can create a perfectly dramatic fall look. Add a thin sweater and leather jacket and you’re basically in Fall fashion nirvana.

I do not pretend to follow or appreciate all trends. For example, I really don’t understand the whole “high-low skirt” concept, but it is all about making specific trends work for you. If you do not like plaid, don’t wear it. Maybe pastels are your thing. Be comfortable, be confident and be current.
