The Top Five Plus-Size Dresses Every Fashionista Should Own to “WOW”!

Posted by on March 3, 2014

I live and breathe dresses. When you consider the fact that about 90% of my wardrobe is made up of dresses, and that I only have:

  1. one pair of jeans (because I think you should have at least one pair to qualify as a fashionista these days, and God forbid I don’t pass the bar as one!)
  2. one pair of black pants, and
  3. one pair of leggings (which I mostly use as pajamas)

I think I can comfortably state the above as a fact!

I am always hunting for the perfect plus-size dress for all my planned occasions, whether that event be tomorrow or a few years in the future. One never knows what kind of party life will throw at her, right? When I almost got married, I had three wedding dresses sitting in the closet. (OK, I admit, I may have gotten a tad too much carried away on that one.)

There are certain styles every girl should have in her closet and when you choose a dress, the cut, color, print, fabric, embellishments, and occasion are all essential factors to keep in mind. And of course, choosing the right dress for your shape can absolutely make the difference between turning heads in your direction, or away. I will get into the shape issue in an upcoming post, but for now, I have a list of the top-five-must-have plus-size dresses to have for every girl with a passion for fashion.

Let’s start!

The LBD

A precious gift to women and one of the most well thought-out creations from Ms. Coco Chanel, this timeless and versatile style is the #1 must-have in your closet. This is the item you reach to save, along with your pet and your passport, if your house is about to burn down. I don’t know how many I have, but I know that I wear them year round and style them up or down depending on my mood and the occasion. It can be a wrap, a shift, an A-line, a solid, a print: you name it. Pick a style you love and hang it in your closet.

I love a wrap style or a fitted shift. We have a lot of LBDs at IGIGI, and my personal favorite is the Garnet Dress. First, as a wrap dress, its flatters almost any body type and is therefore one of the easiest styles to pull off. Second, it’s a faux wrap, so you don’t have the hassle of adjusting to make sure the overlaying parts fall into the right place. Finally, it has just the right amount of cleavage, and it shows no more leg than is necessary to turn heads.  The right LBD will do wonders for your mood and make you feel like a million bucks!

The “Sex and the City” Dress

Otherwise known as the “Wow! She looks drop-dead-gorgeous. I need to know where she got that from!” number, this is the dress you wear when:

  1. your ex/heart-breaker (or whatever title he/she may have had in your life once upon a time) calls you in tears and convinces you to meet for a date, or
  2. you plan to spend a weekend at a class reunion.

You get my drift!

It can be a form-fitting cut with a seductive call, an eye-catching detail, or a color to die for, like the Ambrosia Dress in Red or the Nicolette Peplum Dress.

The Cocktail Frock

In the vast world of dresses, I would say this is the trickiest dress to pick and the one that should be chosen with the utmost care. Remember, not all cocktail parties are created equal, so your cocktail dress can make-or-break your appearance depending on how lavish or simple the event is.

In my humble experience, “Cocktail Attire” can have a different meaning around the world depending on the crowd. So it’s best to stick with a sassy yet simple number with understated and almost sweet details. This means no fussy designs.

Therefore, I really like the Francesca Dress in Dark Currant - take that simple base and work your way up with accessories. The Nencia Dress is another perfect candidate with its tastefully played lace, scalloped neckline and sleeves that exudes sweet sophistication. A little more playful and flirtatious is the Thera Dress in Jade, which can be styled with gold jewelry to take it up a few notches.

The Sundress

The most romantic dress of all time, there is no better style that speaks to the sweet girl-next-door look. Whether a maxi or a knee-length, strapless or spaghetti strapped, solid or clad in a wild floral print, the sundress is a must-have in every girl’s wardrobe.

Totally versatile and wearable on a stroll down the main drag, at a pool party on the weekend or on the beach on that exotic summer vacation, the sundress is an easy and essential style that is casually captivating. I love a maxi dress, as it really requires minimum effort without stealing from style. Our all time best seller  at IGIGI, the Tropical Beauty, is my ultimate choice with its vibrancy, followed by the Meinani with its vivid floral print.

The Belle of the Ball Dress

I LOVE a formal event, especially since I am free to jazz it up as much as I can! This is the kind of dress where the sky is the limit as far as details are concerned, and you can really channel that Oscar style you fell in love with, or that runway dress you wish you could snatch right off the model’s back (and somehow manage to sneak out without getting stuck at security).

This dress is almost always floor-length, so shoes are an important factor to consider based on your height and heel preference. Right now, I love the Carolina in Hunter Green. I think that dress speaks for itself, top-to-bottom, with its beautiful concoction of lace, embellishments and draping.

The other one I am crazy about is the Garbo, with that old Hollywood romance look. It makes me feel like I could step into it and the world would instantly become a better place. I think Emme shows my sentiment beautifully!
